There is a growing call inside European political circles to expropriate X from Elon Musk. The idea is to place it under the control of an EU “public foundation.” This move is being pitched as a noble effort to protect free public debate. In reality, it exposes something far more troubling. The EU is willing to abandon democratic principles when speech slips beyond its preferred ideological boundaries.

Nothing says freedom and democracy quite like seizing property from a private citizen.

This proposal is not about safeguarding debate. It is about power. It is about control. And it is about punishing ownership that refuses to yield to centralized political oversight.

Free speech does not need government ownership of platforms. It never has. In fact, history repeatedly demonstrates the opposite. When the state controls the infrastructure of speech, speech exists only at the pleasure of those who govern. Calling the arrangement a “public foundation” does not change that reality. It merely disguises political authority behind softer branding.

Supporters of the takeover argue that X must be rescued from “extremism.” They believe X should be brought in line with “European decency, morality, and reasonable regulation.” These phrases should concern anyone who understands how censorship actually works. They are vague by design. Who defines decency? Who decides what is reasonable? And who gets silenced when opinions challenge the prevailing political orthodoxy?

Once ownership becomes conditional on ideological compliance, property rights stop being rights at all. They become permissions granted by bureaucrats. Today, the target is Elon Musk. Tomorrow, it will be any owner who allows speech that makes those in power uncomfortable.

This is not regulation. It is expropriation.

The argument that extremism justifies extraordinary measures is an old one. It has been used throughout history to justify censorship, surveillance, and repression. It always begins with promises of public safety and ends with the shrinking of permissible dissent. A system claims to defend free debate by eliminating private control. By doing this, it admits it does not trust free debate in the first place.

If the European Union truly believed in democratic resilience, it would not need to seize platforms to enforce its values. It would rely on competition, transparency, and voluntary participation. Users are free to leave platforms they dislike. Advertisers are free to withdraw. Competitors are free to build alternatives. That is how free societies handle speech without coercion.

Expropriation is the tool of regimes that fear losing narrative control.

The irony is impossible to ignore. A proposal framed as saving X for “the Free World” relies on a tactic historically linked to authoritarian systems. When the state decides who can own the means of communication, freedom becomes conditional and democracy becomes performative.

Europe must uphold the principle of speech infrastructure existing outside government control. This is necessary if it is serious about defending freedom of expression. This holds true even when that speech is messy. It also includes speech that is controversial or politically inconvenient.

Otherwise, the message is unmistakable: freedom is tolerated only until it challenges those in charge.
