More than a year after Hurricane Milton damaged Florida’s iconic Sunshine Skyway Fishing Pier, Governor Ron DeSantis has rolled out a full rebuild and repair plan that could keep the pier open for decades.

More importantly, this announcement comes after growing concerns that officials might quietly push the pier toward permanent closure.

From Uncertainty to Action

At a press conference at Pier 22 in Bradenton, DeSantis confirmed that construction will begin this spring on a new pier along the Manatee County side of the Skyway.

The plan lays out clear steps:

• Crews will build a new pier next to the current one
• Workers will keep fishing access open during construction
• The state will upgrade parking and pedestrian access
• Officials will expand fishing areas for the public

After completing the new structure, crews will remove the damaged pier.

Meanwhile, teams will upgrade the Pinellas County side and clear out unused sections.

DeSantis stated that these improvements should extend the pier’s lifespan by at least 20 years.

“This has been a major place for a lot of people,” DeSantis said. “I’m glad that we’re moving forward with that very quickly.”

DeSantis Also Blocks Manatee County Cruise Port

Alongside the pier announcement, DeSantis signed Senate Bill 302, known as the “Coastal Resiliency” bill.

That law blocks dredging and filling in certain coastal areas, which stops a proposed cruise port in Manatee County.

Local opposition had already grown strong against that project.

“There’s not really a need to add another port,” DeSantis said, noting that Tampa Bay already has three deep-water ports.

He also signed House Bill 1417, which removes the Environmental Regulation Commission and speeds up how agencies update environmental rules.

Supporters argue the change will cut red tape and allow faster action.
Critics argue it could reduce oversight.

What This Actually Means

This story goes beyond one pier.

It raises a bigger question: do public spaces stay open, or do they disappear under layers of regulation?
