The European Union (EU) recently made a deal with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, just days before a White House meeting. The EU was dissatisfied with the initial proposal presented, as they were not included among the entities set to recoup funds through resources. Although they could have made this deal at any point, they waited until two days after the White House meeting to announce it, despite having the opportunity to do so the previous year. Following the announcement, the EU publicly allocated 2 billion euros to Ukraine, and now they suddenly express a desire for peace. However, their true intention seems to be securing a prominent position on the list of resource beneficiaries.
This move by the EU is not a virtuous act; rather, they recognized the impending shift in circumstances and understood that they needed to act quickly to avoid being left behind. They may also attempt to claim credit for coordinating the peace deal, despite essentially replicating the agreement the United States, through @SecRubio , had worked out weeks earlier. This explains why Zelensky deviated from the script during the White House meeting—he was aware that the EU would present deals directly to him, prioritizing their own interests over what was best for Ukraine. In the event of an unfavorable outcome, it is likely that one of the EU countries will offer him asylum.
The EU’s current “deal” could have been pursued at any point in the preceding years, but they refrained from doing so until President Trump expressed his desire to end the war. Now, suddenly, they advocate for peace. Their actions strongly suggest that they feared being left behind and scrambled to take action.
Throughout the conflict, the EU has been providing Ukraine with a majority of their American-made military resources, knowing that the United States would replenish their stock. They rotated equipment through Ukraine, fully aware that Ukraine lacked the manpower to secure a victory.
In summary, the EU’s recent actions appear to be a sham, motivated by self-interest rather than a genuine commitment to peace or Ukraine’s well-being.
