Monday night on CNN, that contradiction was on full display when gun-control activist and former Democratic National Committee co-chair David Hogg tried to spin the ongoing government shutdown into a morality play about Obamacare.

The White House and Senate Democrats are betting that public frustration will fall on Trump-aligned Republicans rather than on the obstructionists who created the impasse. In that calculus, furloughed workers, unpaid military personnel, and families missing SNAP benefits are collateral damage, acceptable losses in the greater mission of preserving narrative control.
It is politics as theater: harm the country, then blame your opponents for the injuries.
The Obamacare Mirage
Hogg’s comments also reveal how little ideological consistency remains on the left. Obamacare’s framework, including the controversial subsidy sunset, was deliberately written to make future extensions politically valuable. It created a ticking clock that Democrats could weaponize whenever they needed to paint Republicans as cruel or anti-poor.
That tactic is in full view now. The left cries that losing the temporary subsidies will raise premiums by dozens of percent, but omits that the rate spikes are the product of their own law. It is legislative hostage-taking disguised as compassion.
Jennings was right to call it out. The ACA’s instability is not a Republican sabotage; it is a design feature, a time bomb set years ago by the same people now pretending to hear it tick for the first time.
Reason Replaced by Performance
This moment on CNN was about more than one debate. It was a snapshot of modern liberalism’s operating system: persuasion replaced with repetition, reason replaced with outrage. Hogg’s tone carried moral conviction, but the content was hollow, a collection of talking points pre-programmed for social media sound bites.
And that is the trick. For many on the left, the argument itself no longer matters. Winning the optics battle, getting the viral clip, the headline, the trending hashtag, matters far more than whether the statement holds up under scrutiny.
It is how truth gets replaced by performance. The audience does not hear the argument; they hear the applause.

When reasoning becomes theater, accountability disappears. If facts contradict the narrative, then the facts must be ignored. We have seen it in every major national debate on the border, on policing, on speech, on economics. The same pattern repeats: emotional manipulation replaces data; moral superiority replaces dialogue.
Jennings’ calm logic exposed that reality. Hogg was not debating to discover truth; he was acting out a moral script designed to shame anyone who disagreed. Jennings refused to play along, and that, to the modern left, is the ultimate heresy.
