Democratic Rep. Angie Craig is openly signaling that a federal government shutdown is an acceptable political weapon if Democrats fail to get their way on Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
During an appearance on CNN, Craig was asked directly whether shutting down the federal government over ICE policy should be considered. Her answer was not hesitant.
It should be “on the table.”
That statement alone tells you everything you need to know about where today’s Democratic Party stands. Not on governance. Not on public safety. Not on stability. But on leverage, disruption, and ideological pressure regardless of consequences.
Craig’s comments come as progressive Democrats escalate demands to restrict, defund, or dismantle ICE following a deadly Minneapolis incident involving federal immigration enforcement. Instead of calling for calm, accountability through proper investigation, or legislative debate, Democrats are once again reaching for the nuclear option.
A government shutdown.
Using chaos as leverage
A shutdown does not punish an agency. It punishes the country.
Federal workers get furloughed. Critical services slow or stop. Military families feel the impact. Law enforcement resources strain. Markets react. Small businesses suffer. And Americans who have nothing to do with Washington’s power games pay the price.
Yet Craig and others on the Left are treating a shutdown like a bargaining chip instead of a last-resort failure of leadership.
This is not new. Democrats have repeatedly shown a willingness to burn institutions down politically when they cannot control them. Border enforcement is simply the latest target.
ICE has become the Left’s ideological enemy because it represents enforcement of laws they no longer want enforced. Rather than change the law through Congress, they attempt to coerce outcomes by threatening dysfunction.
Minneapolis as political fuel
The Minneapolis shooting is being used not as a moment for fact-finding, but as a rallying cry. Before investigations are completed, before all facts are known, Democrats are already assigning blame to federal enforcement itself.
That is not justice. That is narrative engineering.
Instead of allowing due process and accountability to work, Craig and others are pushing collective punishment of an entire agency through funding threats. That approach does nothing to improve safety and everything to inflame tensions.
The real message
When a sitting member of Congress says shutting down the government “should be on the table,” the message is clear:
If Democrats do not get compliance, they are willing to destabilize the country.
This is not responsible governance. It is hostage politics.
ICE agents do not write the law. They enforce it. Congress does. And when lawmakers refuse to do their jobs legislatively, then threaten a shutdown to force ideological outcomes, the problem is not ICE.
The problem is Congress.
