Science isn’t about certainty it’s about discovery. Yet, in modern debates, “the science is settled” has become a political slogan rather than a scientific truth. Real science is never settled; it’s a process of testing, failing, and refining what we know.
History reminds us how wrong “settled” ideas can be. For centuries, experts insisted the Sun revolved around the Earth. Doctors prescribed bloodletting to cure illness. In the 1950s, ads claimed DDT and cigarettes were safe. Even government nutrition guides once told Americans to eat piles of bread daily advice now linked to widespread health problems. Each example was backed by “experts” until evidence proved otherwise. It’s evident that science is an ever-evolving field and can never truly be settled.
True science welcomes challenge. Galileo, Einstein, and others advanced knowledge not by accepting authority, but by questioning it. When dissent is silenced, discovery dies. The moment politics, media, or ideology decide which questions are allowed, trust in science collapses. Science, by its very nature, is never settled.
Science works because it changes. Each generation corrects the last. The goal isn’t to protect dogma it’s to pursue truth through open inquiry. To say “the science is settled” is to abandon the very spirit that made science one of humanity’s greatest achievements. Clearly, the idea that science is settled contradicts the core of scientific exploration.
