Emergency crews respond to a massive fire at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport after witnesses reported a UPS cargo jet exploding shortly after takeoff on November 4, 2025.
Louisville, KY — November 4, 2025 | 9:45 PM EST
An unexpected UPS plane explosion in Louisville occurred earlier today, causing considerable concern and disruption.
The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed that UPS Flight 2976, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11F, crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (KSDF) on Tuesday evening.
According to the FAA’s official statement, “UPS Flight 2976 crashed around 5:15 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Nov. 4, after departing from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky. The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 was headed to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu. The FAA and NTSB will investigate. The NTSB will lead the investigation and will provide all updates.”
The FAA emphasized that the information is preliminary and subject to change.
Eyewitness footage shows the aircraft’s right-side engine on fire during takeoff, followed by a massive explosion seconds after liftoff. Fire crews and emergency responders were dispatched immediately as smoke and debris were visible across the airport’s southern cargo area.
A UPS Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-11F cargo jet has exploded just seconds after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (KSDF), sending a massive fireball into the night sky and forcing a complete airport shutdown.
Eyewitness video shows the aircraft’s right-side engine engulfed in flames during rotation, followed moments later by a violent mid-air explosion as the jet climbed only a few hundred feet above the runway. The aircraft identified as UPS Flight 5X2976 (Registration N259UP) was departing Louisville bound for Philadelphia when the blast occurred.
Scanner traffic from Louisville Metro Fire and Airport Rescue units confirms a Level-3 aircraft emergency with a fuel-fire perimeter declared along the south runway complex. Witnesses reported debris and secondary explosions across the cargo apron.
