A new national survey finds most Americans support ICE agents doing their jobs without obstruction, while opposition activism draws limited public sympathy.

Newly released polling data shows a clear majority of Americans continue to support U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and believe its agents should be allowed to perform their duties without interference. This holds true even as activist pressure and political opposition intensify.
According to a national survey conducted by Plymouth Union Public Research, 57 percent of Americans believe ICE agents “should be able to do their job without being impeded or harassed.” The poll measured public attitudes toward immigration enforcement and deportation operations. It also measured opinions about organized efforts aimed at obstructing federal officers.
The results suggest broad public backing for enforcement activity and limited sympathy for anti-ICE agitation.
Strong Public Support for Enforcement
The survey found that voters largely view illegal immigration as a serious issue and approve of the current enforcement approach.
“Voters broadly see illegal immigration as a serious issue that President Trump is properly addressing,” the survey stated. “There is clear openness for enforcement measures and general approval of the current approach, especially efforts to disrupt cartels and hold foreign actors accountable.”
Support extended directly to the officers tasked with carrying out those policies.
“Support extends to ICE officers enforcing these policies. Voters emphasize respect for their service and the need to let them do their jobs,” the findings noted. “By contrast, organized efforts to obstruct enforcement draw limited sympathy and appear confined to a small but vocal slice of the electorate.”
When asked about priorities, 74 percent of respondents said fighting illegal immigration is “an important issue” for both President Donald Trump and Congress to address. However, only 7 percent described the issue as “not important at all.”
Public Views ICE Work as Dangerous
The poll also reflected strong public recognition of the risks ICE agents face.
Fifty-eight percent of respondents said ICE agents put their lives on the line to keep the public safe, while 57 percent described their work as a “dangerous job of keeping us safe from violent criminals.” A slim majority, 51 percent, explicitly approved of using ICE agents to combat illegal immigration.
“Overall, the center of public opinion favors the America First message of fighting illegal immigration and supporting ICE agents protecting our communities,” the survey concluded.
Political Pressure and Protests Continue
The polling comes amid heightened tensions surrounding ICE enforcement, particularly following a deadly ICE-involved shooting in Minneapolis earlier this month.
Renee Good was shot by an ICE agent during an enforcement operation. Afterward, according to reporting, she obstructed the operation and appeared to drive into an ICE agent. This prompted the agent to fire defensive shots.
In the aftermath, anti-ICE demonstrations erupted in Minneapolis and spread to other major cities. Meanwhile, Minnesota Democrats have filed suit seeking to remove ICE agents from the state. Congressional Democrats have also threatened to withhold agency funding unless sweeping reforms are enacted.
Despite the protests and political pressure, the survey indicates that such opposition does not reflect majority public sentiment.
Poll Methodology and Contrasting Data
The Plymouth Union Public Research poll surveyed 1,000 likely general-election voters nationwide, with a margin of error of 3.1 percent. The sample was evenly split along partisan lines. Republicans and Democrats each made up 40 percent of respondents. Independents comprised the remaining 20 percent.
Other polling has reportedly suggested softening support for President Trump’s immigration agenda. Internal GOP polling reviewed earlier this month found that 60 percent of independent voters and 58 percent of undecided voters believed Trump was “too focused” on deportations, according to Axios.
However, the Plymouth Union survey shows that while intensity may vary, a strong majority of Americans continue to support immigration enforcement. They also oppose efforts to obstruct ICE operations.
