When Cooperation Became Optional, Chaos Followed

The clash between U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and blue jurisdictions did not manifest out of thin air. It was engineered.

For years, progressive officials chose ideology over coordination. Then they acted shocked when the system began to break down. This conflict is not about paperwork. It is about whether public officials will cooperate with federal law enforcement or actively undermine it while blaming the fallout on everyone else.

ICE does one job. Identify removable noncitizens, many with serious criminal histories, and take custody when local cases conclude. That used to be routine. Now it is treated as moral heresy.

Detainers Are Not The Problem

An ICE detainer is a straightforward concept. When a local jail plans to release a criminal alien, ICE asks to take custody instead of forcing agents to hunt the person down later. That is it.

For decades, local and federal agencies treated this transfer as standard practice. No rallies. No press conferences or dramatic speeches about resistance.

Then the left declared cooperation immoral.

Sanctuary policies told jails to cut criminals loose even when ICE was waiting. Cities bragged about it. States codified it. Naturally, the inevitable result followed.

ICE agents are now forced to make arrests in neighborhoods, workplaces, and parking lots instead of secure jail sally ports. Blue jurisdiction officials then point to the disruption they caused and pretend it is proof of federal overreach.

From Policy Disagreement To Public Incitement

The rhetoric did not stop at refusal.

City councils passed resolutions condemning ICE. Governors accused agents of terrorizing communities. Activists and elected officials alike invoked the most inflammatory language they could.

KKK. Nazis.
Gestapo. Stormtroopers.

Those labels did not come from anonymous trolls. They came from mayors, governors, lawmakers, and their allies on the left. They knew exactly what they were doing. When you paint law enforcement as fascists, you invite confrontation.

This antagonism has now spilled over into activist networks that cross the line from peaceful protest into active resistance against law enforcement operations. Reporting on the Minnesota-based group MN ICE Watch shows that it recently circulated a “de-arrest” guide that frames tactics for physical interference with officers as a “micro-intifada.”

The manual provides specific instructions for confronting arresting officers and freeing detainees from custody. These tactics encourage interference with federal law enforcement, which invites escalation, injury, and criminal charges.

The same political class then acts surprised when tempers flare, riots erupt, agents get attacked with shovels and vehicles, and people end up getting shot.

Sanctuary Claims And The Public Safety Lie

Here is where the left’s argument collapses.

Officials insist their sanctuary policies protect public safety. At the same time, they release violent felons and sexual predators back into the very communities they claim to want to defend.

This is not hypothetical. ICE and DOJ case records show that local officials routinely ignore ICE detainers and release criminals anyway. Those criminals almost immediately reoffend. Some commit new violent crimes. Others target children. Some kill.

Afterward, the same officials who forced ICE into street arrests lecture the public about safety. The concern rings hollow.

If public safety were the priority, local officials would hand offenders over to federal authorities and remove them from the equation. Instead, officials choose outrage theater and risk.

How It Used To Work

For decades, when a noncitizen finished a county or state sentence, the transfer to federal custody was immediate and uncontroversial. There was no grandstanding. No resistance. No chaos.

That system worked because adults ran it. A career federal prosecutor put it plainly:

“DHS publicly announced that if state officials would cooperate, and assist them in focusing their efforts on criminal offenders — most of whom violate state law and are in state prisons/jails — then DHS would not be arresting many of those it is now arresting.

DHS told the states that if they were forced to go into communities and neighborhoods to “hunt” for the individuals they were targeting, any illegal alien encountered while doing so would be subjected to the appropriate legal process re removal.

30+ years ago when I first began as a federal prosecutor, the Border Patrol would pick-up 20 illegal aliens just released from state prison.  The prison officials would turn them over to the BP at the gates of the prison, they would go into federal custody, and they would be put through the deportation process.  No release back into the community.  

Blue states and cities refuse to do this now.  They refuse to notify ICE of pending releases of state/local prisoners who are illegal alien criminals.  

They force DHS into the choice of doing nothing or doing what they are doing now.

So who is at fault?”

Manufactured Conflict Has Consequences

The left created this showdown by refusing cooperation, inflaming rhetoric, and encouraging public resistance against federal agents. Now they point to the resultant chaos and pretend it appeared spontaneously.

They broke a system that once protected communities quietly and effectively. Then they blamed ICE for the wreckage.

This is not resistance. It is irresponsibility dressed up as virtue.
And it is getting people hurt.
