Woman Killed During ICE Enforcement Operation
A woman was shot and killed Wednesday morning in south Minneapolis during a federal immigration enforcement operation involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to federal authorities and local reporting.
Shooting Occurred During Targeted Federal Action
The shooting occurred near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue as ICE agents were conducting what the Department of Homeland Security described as a targeted enforcement action. Federal officials said an ICE officer fired his weapon after a vehicle driven by the woman was used in a manner they described as threatening to agents on the scene.
DHS Says Officer Acted in Self-Defense
According to DHS, the officer acted in self-defense after the vehicle accelerated toward federal personnel. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Federal Authorities state the officer sustained injuries.
Heavy Law Enforcement Presence and Crowd Response
The incident prompted a large-scale law enforcement response, involving local police, federal agents, and emergency personnel. Video from the scene showed crowds gathering and agents deploying chemical irritants to disperse bystanders, Fox 9 reported.
Part of Broader ICE Enforcement Surge
ICE said the operation was part of a broader immigration enforcement surge in the Minneapolis–St. Paul area. The agency has not released the identity of the woman who was killed, pending notification of next of kin.
Local and State Officials Respond
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey criticized the federal operation, calling it destabilizing and saying ICE activity has contributed to unrest in the city. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said state officials are working to gather additional information and urged calm as investigations proceed.
