Secret Service detained an adult male after midnight Monday. Vance says his family was not home.
CINCINNATI — Law enforcement investigated an overnight incident at Vice President JD Vance’s Cincinnati residence after an adult male allegedly caused property damage and broke exterior windows.
According to multiple reports, the incident unfolded shortly after midnight on Monday, January 5. U.S. Secret Service personnel assigned to the property detained the suspect, who was then taken into custody by the Cincinnati Police Department. Authorities said the residence was unoccupied at the time and that Vice President Vance and his family were not in Ohio.
Local reporting in Cincinnati identifies the suspect as William Defoor, a 26 year old man, with several local charges listed. Those reported charges include criminal damaging, obstructing official business, criminal trespass and a felony vandalism count. Federal charging decisions may still be reviewed, according to statements attributed to the Secret Service and local officials.
Vice President Vance addressed the incident publicly on Monday morning, saying he was grateful for the quick response and that, as far as he could tell, the suspect tried to break in by hammering the windows. Vance also urged media outlets to avoid broadcasting close images of his family home.
This remains an active investigation. Authorities have not released a motive and officials have indicated charging decisions are still under review.
