Sen. John Fetterman claims U.S. military intelligence routinely identifies vessels and their occupants, frequently choosing not to carry out strikes.
Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) rejected claims that the U.S. military engages vessels at sea without clear intelligence. He stated that commanders routinely know who is aboard boats. They also know what they are carrying and often decide not to strike.
During an appearance on NewsNation’s Cuomo, Fetterman said the military operates with detailed, real-time intelligence. This is especially true when monitoring vessels in regions tied to drug trafficking and other illicit activity. According to Fetterman, decision-makers are not acting blindly and often choose restraint over kinetic action.
Fetterman emphasized that when the military takes action, it does so with “absolute confidence”. This confidence is in its intelligence. He pushed back on narratives portraying U.S. forces as reckless or indiscriminate, arguing instead that strikes are deliberate and based on verified information.
He also noted that similar operational standards existed under prior administrations. This includes during the Obama years. His statement suggests that current tactics are not a dramatic departure from established U.S. military practice.
The remarks come amid renewed scrutiny of U.S. naval operations targeting vessels suspected of drug trafficking and weapons transport. Critics have raised concerns about transparency and oversight. Supporters argue the operations are necessary to disrupt transnational criminal networks. These operations are needed to protect U.S. security interests.
