Chris Cuomo sparked backlash. He insisted that no one on the political left has ever ignored a congressional subpoena and walked away without consequences. The heated exchange erupted after Cuomo mocked a conservative commenter. The commenter pointed out the double standard surrounding former Trump adviser Peter Navarro. Navarro is presently imprisoned for refusing to follow a subpoena.
Cuomo claimed Democrats had never done what Navarro did and challenged critics to produce even one example. It took only minutes for users to remind him. They cited several high profile cases from the Obama administration that contradict his certainty.
The most obvious example is former Attorney General Eric Holder. Holder was held in contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over documents tied to Operation Fast and Furious. Despite the contempt citation, the Justice Department refused to prosecute him, leaving the penalty without meaningful enforcement.
Critics also pointed to Lois Lerner, the IRS official at the center of the agency’s targeting scandal. Lerner refused to answer questions before Congress, invoked the Fifth Amendment, and was later held in contempt. As with Holder, no criminal charges followed.
Users further highlighted more recent controversies. One example is Hunter Biden arriving on Capitol Hill. He delivered a press statement instead of complying with a subpoena for a closed door deposition. Regardless of political affiliation, ignoring such examples creates a false narrative about how subpoena enforcement has historically been handled.
The inconsistency is plain. Congress has struggled for decades to enforce subpoenas. The outcomes have varied widely depending on the political environment and the control of the Department of Justice. To claim that Democrats have never defied a subpoena or avoided consequences requires ignoring the public record.
Whether Cuomo is unaware of these cases or hoping no one remembers is unclear. What is clear is that many Americans have not forgotten. They were quick to correct his revision of recent political history.
