Rep. Bennie Thompson reacts during a House committee hearing, taken from the official House live feed.
Two National Guardsmen were ambushed in Washington DC. One is dead. One is recovering after being shot in the head. The attack was deliberate. The suspect had motive. The FBI is investigating terrorism. That is the reality on the ground.
What was Said
In the middle of this, Rep. Bennie Thompson publicly described the attack as an “unfortunate accident.” Gov. Kristi Noem corrected him immediately. “Unfortunate accident?! It was a TERRORIST ATTACK! They shot our Guardsmen in the HEAD!”
This was not an accident. It was an ambush.
The Heroes Turned victims
Specialist Sarah Beckstrom was killed. Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe survived after taking a gunshot to the head. Both were targeted while serving near the White House. The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, has been charged with murder. Federal investigators are reviewing terrorism as a motive.
Calling that scene an “accident” strips away the truth and shields the intent behind the violence.
Whitewashing Terrorism Has Consequences
Downplaying a terror attack is not caution, not restraint. It is not waiting for clarity. This was choice words to soften reality for political comfort or cover.
Here is what that choice does.
1. It undermines the sacrifice of our Guardsmen
They were attacked because they wore the uniform. Anything that dilutes that fact is an insult to their service.
2. It signals to future attackers that the political cost is low
Terrorists watch how leaders react. When elected officials refuse to use plain language, it sends a message that the consequences for attacking servicemembers are negotiable.
3. It gives the suspect cover
Calling an ambush an accident softens public outrage. That benefits one person. The attacker.
4. It distorts national security policy
If leadership cannot name terrorism when it happens, how can the country prepare for the next strike
America Deserves Leaders Who Tell the Truth
There are only two possible responses to a terror attack.
Courage tells the truth.
Cowardice smothers it with euphemisms.
Two Guardsmen were shot. One died in the line of duty. One is recovering from a gunshot to the head. The suspect had motive. Officials are investigating terrorism. Calling it an accident is not a mistake. It is a cover up.
