Two members of the United States National Guard were shot Wednesday afternoon just blocks from the White House, triggering a massive law-enforcement response and raising immediate questions about security in the nation’s capital.
The shooting occurred at 17th Street and I Street NW, an area that borders the White House security perimeter and houses several federal agencies. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) confirmed the incident publicly in a statement posted to its official X account.

MPD described the scene as a “critical incident” and instructed the public to avoid the area as officers and federal partners swarmed the intersection to secure the scene and search for suspects.
While multiple outlets have reported that two National Guard soldiers were shot, authorities have not yet released details on their conditions, identities, or the circumstances leading up to the attack. No suspect description, motive, or information about possible arrests has been made public.
The Associated Press, citing a law-enforcement official, confirmed the victims were National Guard members. MPD has not yet given a full briefing, leaving several critical questions unanswered.
What We Know So Far
- The shooting occurred near 17th and I Streets NW.
- MPD declared it a critical incident.
- Two National Guard members were struck by gunfire.
- Their conditions are still unknown.
- No suspect information has been released.
Why This Matters
If National Guard personnel assigned to safeguard federal property can be shot within sight of the White House, it calls into question the strength of D.C.’s security measures. The lack of immediate transparency from city leadership and federal agencies only heightens concerns at a time when violent crime in the capital is already drawing national scrutiny.
The public deserves clear, immediate answers not silence or evasive briefings that only deepen distrust.
