A National Guardsman critically wounded in a late November shooting in Washington, D.C. is demonstrating what military medical staff are calling “extraordinary progress.” Doctors report he can now breathe on his own. He is also able to take assisted steps toward recovery.
Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, a member of the West Virginia National Guard, was ambushed on Nov. 26 while patrolling near a subway station just blocks from the White House. During the attack, Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, also of the West Virginia Guard, was shot and later died from her injuries.
MedStar Washington Hospital Center neurosurgeon Dr. Jeffrey Mai provided the latest update. He confirmed that Wolfe, who suffered a critical gunshot wound to the head, has reached crucial milestones in his recovery. Wolfe is now breathing without a ventilator and can stand with assistance. Medical professionals say these signals show strength and determination after the severe injury.
Mai mentioned Wolfe’s progress has qualified him to be transferred out of acute hospital care. He will move into inpatient rehabilitation. There, he will continue work to regain full ability. His medical team and family have praised the care he has received and acknowledged the impact of widespread public support.
Wolfe’s parents released a statement expressing deep gratitude for the medical care. Additionally, they expressed gratitude for the prayers coming from around the world. The support has helped sustain their son’s recovery. They say that these have helped sustain their son’s recovery.
“The care has been remarkable, and they have told us Andy’s progress is miraculous,” they said.
The attack that wounded Wolfe and killed Beckstrom remains under legal scrutiny. A suspect has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting, and court proceedings are ongoing.
