A powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan early Monday local time near Aomori Prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency and the United States Geological Survey.

Where?

The quake produced strong shaking across parts of northern Honshu and southern Hokkaido. Japan issued an immediate tsunami warning for coastal areas of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate following the initial impact.

Tsunami Warning

Early projections warned of possible tsunami waves up to three meters. However, as of the latest official measurements reported by Japanese media, the largest waves recorded have not exceeded 0.7 meters as of the time of this report.
