SEOUL, South Korea — U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in South Korea on Wednesday for a high-level visit focused on trade, defense cooperation, and regional security amid rising tensions with North Korea.
Air Force One touched down in Gyeongju early Wednesday, where Trump was welcomed by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and senior officials during a formal arrival ceremony featuring a full honor guard and red-carpet reception. The visit comes at a pivotal moment for U.S.–South Korea relations as both nations seek to strengthen economic and strategic ties.
During the ceremony, the South Korean government awarded President Trump the country’s highest civilian honor — the Grand Order of Mugunghwa — in recognition of his efforts to advance bilateral relations and promote stability in the region. Officials also presented Trump with a golden crown, symbolizing the longstanding friendship between Seoul and Washington.

Talks between Trump and President Lee are expected to cover a range of topics including a major trade agreement estimated at $350 billion, tariff policies, industrial cooperation, and defense commitments under the U.S.–Korea Mutual Defense Treaty. Discussions are also expected to address joint missile-defense programs, shipbuilding partnerships, and coordination with Japan within the Indo-Pacific framework.
The visit coincides with new missile tests by North Korea earlier this week, which South Korean officials view as a signal to Washington ahead of the talks. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deterrence and open dialogue to reduce regional tensions.
President Trump is scheduled to participate in economic roundtables and cultural events before traveling to Busan for the 2025 APEC Summit, where he will join other Asia-Pacific leaders to discuss global trade and security policy.
Officials in Seoul called the visit “a reaffirmation of the U.S.–Korea alliance,” while White House representatives described it as “a forward-looking engagement to ensure stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.”
