When Barack Obama carried out thousands of drone strikes across Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia, the Democratic Party treated the entire program as responsible counterterrorism. There were civilian deaths. There were follow up strikes that hit targets a second time. Human rights groups condemned the practice. The UN raised concerns. Yet Democrats did not demand prosecution. They did not call for the Secretary of Defense to resign. They did not threaten impeachment. The overall party stance was support or silence.

Even Senator Rand Paul, who built his reputation on limiting executive power, defended Obama’s drone actions in 2015. There was no national uproar. No moral crusade. No accusation that a second strike was a war crime.

Now compare that to the reaction toward Secretary Pete Hegseth. After a single follow up strike in the Caribbean, Democrats are demanding he resign. They are suggesting international prosecution. They are floating impeachment. The same tactic once accepted without question is suddenly treated as a criminal act because a Republican administration used it.

Nothing about the strategy changed. Only the politics did.

This selective outrage exposes a double standard. If Democrats believed the second strike tactic was immoral, they had eight years to say so. There were no hearings. No investigations. No accountability demands. Silence then, hysteria now. The difference is not principle but partisanship.

A country cannot function with two sets of rules for the same military decision. Either follow up strikes are a war crime or they are a tragic reality of modern warfare. What cannot be justified is claiming the tactic was responsible leadership under Obama but criminal misconduct under Hegseth.

That is politics, not principle, and everyone can see it.
