Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is blaming President Trump for the deadly shooting of two National Guard members in Washington DC. She argues the tragedy was a direct result of his decision to place troops on city streets. She claimed that the president’s crackdown created unnecessary danger. This, according to her, opened the door to the violence that followed.

In her interview she questioned the necessity of the attacker’s cross-country travel. Would the attacker have targeted law enforcement in the capital if the Guard had not been deployed there initially? She said the deployment was not coordinated with local leadership. It was driven by political motives rather than public safety needs. According to her, existing law enforcement agencies were capable of handling crime without bringing the military into civilian neighborhoods.

The shooting, which killed one Guard member and wounded another, reignited debate over the role of the military in domestic policing. Critics argued that Trump treated the National Guard as a political tool. Supporters insisted the Guard was needed because Washington DC has continued to suffer from rising violent crime. The suspect, an Afghan national whose permission to remain in the United States had expired, added an immigration component to the political fallout.

Wasserman Schultz maintained that the president’s own decisions created the environment that placed service members in danger. She said Trump should accept responsibility instead of trying to redirect blame. She emphasized that deploying troops into a civilian environment comes with predictable risks that leaders can’t ignore.
