West Virginia National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom, 20, has died after being wounded in an attack near the White House, according to statements from President Donald Trump and updates reported Thursday evening.
Beckstrom, who enlisted in June 2023, was described by the president as “highly respected” and “outstanding in every way.” She and another National Guard member were ambushed Wednesday in Washington DC while performing security duties assigned to the region.
Trump confirmed her death while addressing military personnel at Mar a Lago, telling the audience he was informed moments before taking the stage. “She’s just passed away. She’s no longer with us. She was savagely attacked,” he said, noting that Beckstrom’s parents were with her at the time of her passing.
The second Guard member wounded in the attack remains in critical condition. “He’s fighting for his life and hopefully we’ll get better news,” Trump said.
Authorities identified the suspect as Rahmanullah Lakanwal. Trump described the suspect as a “monster” and stated the individual is also in serious condition following the confrontation.
Updates regarding the investigation, the motive, and the condition of the second victim are expected as officials continue to release information.
