National Guard Targeted Media Rhetoric Has Consequences

A few weeks ago, a CNN guest went on national television and compared the National Guard to Nazis. He claimed the president was “creating units, official military units, to watch the American people,” and then said it reminded him of Germany in the 1930s.
That type of rhetoric dehumanizes service members and paints them as a threat to the public. It is not responsible commentary. It is reckless fear mongering.
And now, two National Guard members have been shot in Washington, D.C.
The same political voices who pushed this narrative of the Guard as a creeping authoritarian force are now pretending the atmosphere they helped create played no role in escalating hostility. They talk constantly about protecting democracy, yet they work to undermine trust in the very Americans who step forward to protect it.
You cannot smear the National Guard as a danger to civilians, tell the public they are being used as domestic watchers, and then act shocked when unstable individuals take that paranoia seriously. When you repeatedly dehumanize a group, someone eventually acts on the message.
Now the media reports on the shooting with somber tones, hoping viewers forget the commentary they amplified. If a politician compared a civilian group to Nazis and violence followed, the accusations would be immediate. When it involves our troops, that outrage mysteriously disappears.
There is absolutely no justification for comparing American service members to one of the most evil regimes in world history. It is dishonest, corrosive, irresponsible, and dangerous.
Two Guardsmen are now casualties in a political climate where demonizing the uniform has become a fashionable talking point.

Words matter. People who stir hostility against our servicemembers should be held to the same standard they demand from everyone else. SHR Media will continue to call out this hypocrisy with no hesitation.
