The shooting of two West Virginia National Guard members in broad daylight near the White House is not just another tragic headline. It is the clearest and most brutal reminder of how lawless Washington, D.C. has become. When someone can walk up in the middle of the day and open fire on uniformed Guard members, it tells you everything you need to know about the state of public safety in the nation’s capital.

This attack does not weaken the argument for the National Guard. It strengthens it. Crime in D.C. is not an accident. It is the direct result of failed Democratic leadership and the culture of excuse making that has taken root inside the city’s government and the national party.

For years Democrats have protected violent offenders with soft policies, reduced penalties, and endless attempts to blame everything except the person pulling the trigger. Criminals are coddled. Victims are ignored. Law enforcement is smeared. The military is demonized. The political rhetoric coming out of the Democratic Party has consequences. When leaders spend years calling officers Nazis, fascists, storm troopers, and murderers, it should not shock anyone that violent criminals begin to believe they can attack the people who protect this country without consequences.

A New Low: Democrats Release Video Painting National Guard Troops as Anti Constitution

Adding fuel to this fire, Democrats released a new video that outright portrayed National Guard troops as people willing to violate the Constitution just for doing their job. The message was simple and toxic. Suggest that the Guard cannot be trusted. Suggest that they are tools of political oppression. Suggest that they stand against the Constitution rather than for it.

That kind of rhetoric is not harmless. It tells the worst people in society that these troops are fair game. It invites hostility. It paints honorable service members as enemies. And when paired with soft on crime policies that already embolden criminals, it creates the exact environment where a daylight shooting of National Guard personnel becomes more likely.

When political leaders spend years attacking the people who defend the public, the public becomes less safe. That video was not just irresponsible. It was dangerous. It reinforced the same message violent offenders already believe. That attacking law enforcement and military personnel is justified. That these men and women are legitimate targets.

These are not isolated incidents. Time and time again the pattern repeats. Violent offenders are released. They reoffend. Innocent people pay the price. We see it across the country. The man accused of setting a woman on fire on a Chicago train, Lawrence Reed, had been arrested at least seventy two times in Cook County over a thirty year criminal record and convicted in roughly fifteen of those cases. The suspect in the fatal stabbing of a woman on a light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina, Decarlos Brown Jr., had been arrested fourteen times previously. This is the same cycle of failure playing out again in Washington. The Guard members shot near the White House are the newest victims in a long line of chaos fostered by a political class that refuses to confront crime because acknowledging reality would expose the failures of their own ideology.

Instead of accountability we get excuses. Instead of responsibility we get blame shifting. Instead of action we get posts and press releases. Meanwhile the streets become more dangerous and the people tasked with keeping order become the primary targets of criminals who know they will not face real consequences.

The National Guard was deployed to support the nation’s capital because the situation required it. This attack proves beyond any doubt that their presence was justified. The danger is real. The threat is growing. And the people who created the environment that allowed this to happen are pretending they had nothing to do with it.

Washington, D.C. has become a warning. When you demonize the people who defend you, when you elevate criminal excuses over public safety, and when you replace justice with ideology, this is what happens. Innocent people get hurt and criminals gain the confidence to keep attacking.

If leaders refuse to restore order then the Guard must remain. Their presence is not the problem. It is the only thing preventing the chaos from getting even worse.
