Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced on Tuesday that she will not seek a fourth term. This officially ends a decade in office that reshaped the nation’s capital in both acclaim and controversy.
Bowser, first elected in 2014, released a video statement reflecting on her 10-year tenure. She highlighted what she described as major achievements across education, housing, and infrastructure. She credited her administration with increasing school enrollment and graduation rates. She also spurred record investment in affordable housing and completed large-scale infrastructure projects such as the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge.
She also emphasized her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bowser repeatedly framed her administration as a defender of the city’s autonomy. She said Washington “stood tall against bullies who threatened our very autonomy.” This was a reference to conflicts with federal oversight and the long-standing battle over home rule.
Her decision not to run again triggers a competitive 2026 mayoral race. Several D.C. Council members are already rumored to be preparing campaigns. After three terms, Bowser leaves behind a mixed legacy. Her legacy includes strong construction and housing growth paired with persistent concerns about crime, affordability, and federal intervention.
In her message, Bowser said she wants the next year to focus on “running through the tape.” She presents the remainder of her term as a final push to complete outstanding projects and cement her administration’s stated accomplishments.
