California Gov. Gavin Newsom blasts Senate Democrats for “capitulating” in the shutdown deal,

In the political arena, the recent events surrounding Gavin Newsom’s shutdown deal betrayal have sparked intense debate and discussion.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) called Senate Democrats’ deal with Republicans to reopen the government “pathetic.” He accused them of betraying “working Americans” after failing to secure an extension of enhanced Obamacare premium subsidies.
Newsom, a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election, took to social media Sunday night. This was after eight Democrats voted with Republicans in a procedural vote to allow a continuing resolution (CR) funding the government to advance.
“Pathetic,” he wrote from his personal X account.
“This isn’t a deal. It’s a surrender. Don’t bend the knee,” his press office added.
On his official gubernatorial account, Newsom declared: “Tonight’s Senate vote on the federal government shutdown should have been a time for strength. Instead we saw capitulation and a betrayal of working Americans. The American people need more from their leaders.”
Despite admitting that the Democrats had the power to continue keeping the government shut down, Newsom has spent the last 41 days blaming it on President Donald Trump and Republicans.
Just hours earlier, Newsom appeared on CNN to call the Trump administration “shameful.” He accused it of using the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as “a bargaining chip to end this shutdown.”
Sens. Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), and Tim Kaine (D-VA) joined Catherine Cortez-Masto (D-NM), Angus King (I-ME), and John Fetterman (D-PA). They broke ranks with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to advance the House-passed CR.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) was the sole Republican “no” vote.
The motion passed by a razor-thin margin. It allowed a vote on a clean CR to fund the government through January 30, 2026, including a package of “relatively non-controversial appropriations bills” through the fiscal year.
Instead of securing a guarantee for Covid-era enhanced Obamacare subsidies, Democrats received only a promise of a future vote. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has not committed to taking it up.
Newsom’s Rebuke and the Democrat Divide
Newsom’s remarks hit harder because they expose a growing rift within the Democratic Party. This rift is between those who want to hold firm on progressive demands and those willing to settle for a deal simply to reopen government operations.
His language “capitulation,” “betrayal,” “surrender” reflects frustration that Democrats negotiated away their leverage while pretending to be the moral victors.
If this was supposedly a “Republican shutdown,” then how did Republicans manage to reopen the government without giving a single concession? Democrats were the ones blocking every attempt to end it. That doesn’t sound like Republican obstruction. It sounds like Democrat obstruction.
Newsom’s public rebuke underscores that frustration and signals a larger identity crisis within the party. Progressives see it as a surrender, moderates see it as damage control. Either way, it leaves Democrats appearing fractured and weak while Republicans emerge having given up nothing at all.
Editorial Closure
In Washington, it’s easy to talk about “doing what’s best for the people,” but when a party folds without securing the promises it made, it’s not compromise, it’s capitulation. Democrats demanded extended health-care subsidies and ended up with a handshake and a hope. Newsom’s anger isn’t misplaced. It’s a reflection of millions who see their leaders swap conviction for convenience.
If Democrats truly want to claim they fight for working Americans, they’ll have to prove it not with press releases but with principle. Otherwise, “Don’t bend the knee” won’t just be Newsom’s warning. It will be a campaign slogan haunting the party for years.
