Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced her retirement from Congress, closing the chapter on one of the longest and most polarizing careers in modern American politics.
In a video message released Thursday, Pelosi confirmed she will not seek re-election at the end of her term in January 2027, marking the formal date for Nancy Pelosi’s retirement after nearly forty years representing San Francisco, California.
“We have made history, we have made progress,” Pelosi said. “As we go forward, my message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power.”

Pelosi, 85, was first elected in 1987 and went on to become the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House, holding that position twice from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. The role, second in line to the presidency after the vice president, placed her at the center of nearly every major legislative battle of the last two decades.
Legacy and Influence
Pelosi’s tenure defined the Democratic Party’s legislative direction for an entire generation. She was instrumental in advancing Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act and later helped pass President Biden’s infrastructure and climate legislation. Discussions of her era often highlight her legislative triumphs and the symbolism around Nancy Pelosi’s retirement.
Her leadership also made her a focal point of Republican opposition. To many on the right, Pelosi came to symbolize Washington’s entrenched elite pushing high-spending agendas and wielding power with little accountability.
Pelosi also became a defining antagonist to Donald Trump, famously tearing up his 2020 State of the Union address on live television. She led two impeachment efforts against him, in 2019 and 2021 both of which ended in Senate acquittals.
Shifting the Party and the Country
After stepping down from party leadership in 2022, Pelosi was succeeded by Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), marking the first generational shift in Democratic House leadership in nearly twenty years.
Even after leaving the speakership, Pelosi maintained influence behind the scenes most notably through California’s Proposition 50, a 2026 redistricting measure aimed at reclaiming five House seats for Democrats. Her retirement opens a new chapter for those she mentored.
Her decision to retire officially ends a political era that shaped the legislative priorities, fundraising machine, and internal discipline of the modern Democratic Party.
