In a recent development, a former congressional staffer faked attack allegations, shaking political circles with the news.

A former congressional aide to Rep. Jeff Van Drew is now facing federal charges after prosecutors say she staged a violent politically motivated attack against herself, complete with zip ties, carved wounds, and anti Trump graffiti, in what authorities describe as a meticulously planned hoax designed to look like political persecution.

According to the criminal complaint, 26 year old Natalie Greene of Ocean City, New Jersey, claimed in July that she was ambushed at a nature preserve by political attackers who targeted her because of her work for Van Drew. The scene she presented was dramatic. Greene was found bound with zip ties, shirt pulled over her head, with multiple cuts across her torso. Written on her stomach were the words “TRUMP WHORE,” and across her back, “IS RACIST.”

Investigators now say none of it was true.

Federal prosecutors allege Greene paid a body modification scarification artist five hundred dollars to inflict the wounds and help stage the attack. According to the complaint, text messages, digital receipts, and other documentation showed Greene not only planned the incident in advance but coordinated the injuries to match the narrative she intended to give law enforcement.

Greene has been charged with one count of conspiracy to convey false statements and hoaxes and one count of making false statements to federal authorities. Each charge carries a potential penalty of up to five years in prison and fines that may reach two hundred fifty thousand dollars.

The alleged staged attack sparked immediate concern at the time, given rising tensions in national politics and previous real attacks on public officials and staff. Prosecutors now say the incident was not a political assault. It was scripted.

A spokesperson for Van Drew said Greene is no longer employed by the office and expressed hope that she receives whatever help she needs. Van Drew himself told reporters he knew nothing beyond what was already public. Greene’s attorney has emphasized that she remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.

If the allegations hold, this incident is a reminder of how politically charged hoaxes can damage public trust, distort national conversations, and drown out victims of real political violence. False claims may generate headlines, but they also deepen skepticism, fuel division, and hand extremists an easy talking point to dismiss legitimate threats.

Hoaxes do not just waste law enforcement resources. They corrode the credibility of true victims.
