Recently, there has been much discussion around the AOC Schumer 2028 poll.

A new poll from the progressive think tank Data for Progress shows Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) holding a commanding 19-point lead over Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in a hypothetical 2028 Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in New York.

According to the poll, 55% of respondents said they would vote for or lean toward Ocasio-Cortez, while just 36% backed Schumer, with 9% undecided. The findings, first reported by Politico, reveal a widening divide between the Democratic Party’s establishment and its increasingly dominant far-left faction.

Schumer’s Support Collapses Among the Base

The survey, conducted March 26–31 among 767 likely Democratic primary voters, showed Ocasio-Cortez outperforming Schumer in nearly every demographic. However, among moderates, who favored the longtime senator 50%–35%, Schumer prevailed. Even among older voters, ages 45 and above, the margin was close 49% backed or leaned toward AOC.

The results come as Schumer faces growing backlash for supporting a Republican-backed spending bill in early March. This move angered progressives and triggered renewed calls for him to step aside as Senate Democratic leader. The fallout appears to have energized the activist left. As a result, some are openly urging Ocasio-Cortez to challenge Schumer directly in 2028.

Left-Wing Activists Celebrate, Party Leaders Worry

Zephyr Teachout, a Fordham law professor and progressive activist, amplified the poll on X, writing, “Good morning to leadership and fighting oligarchy!” Teachout praised Ocasio-Cortez’s “leadership” and noted that the poll showed 84% of respondents want Democratic leaders to “do more to resist President Donald Trump’s actions.”

While AOC declined to comment on a potential run, her growing influence among younger and far-left Democrats signals trouble for Schumer’s hold on New York politics. Even some mainstream Democrats are privately expressing concern. They worry that the party’s radical wing could further alienate moderates and independents heading into the 2026 and 2028 election cycles.

“People Just Want a Changing of the Guard”

Political market researcher Adam Carlson noted that despite Schumer’s poor showing, most respondents still view him favorably. However, they’re ready for change.
“People just want a changing of the guard,” Carlson said, highlighting that aside from “very liberal” and younger voters, Schumer still maintains above 50% favorability among most groups.

Still, as progressives continue to dominate the party’s messaging, polls like this reinforce a narrative. Even veteran figures such as Schumer are vulnerable to the same insurgent forces they once tried to appease.

The Data for Progress findings, while several years ahead of any real race, underscore a party wrestling with its identity. The contrast is between old-guard establishment power and a far-left base increasingly intent on taking over.
