Schumer walks out as Sen. Bernie Moreno presses him on COVID-era subsidies and shutdown negotiations, November 2025.

Recently, there was an incident where Schumer walks out during a session, causing quite a stir.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer abruptly walked off the Senate floor Friday. This happened after freshman Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno pressed him for answers about his plan to end the ongoing government shutdown.
In a tense exchange captured on video, Moreno challenged Schumer to produce his proposal “in writing” for lawmakers and the public to review. He also questioned whether individuals making millions of dollars annually would continue receiving taxpayer-funded COVID-era health-care subsidies under the Democratic plan.
“I was going to ask him before he stormed out of the room because evidently he doesn’t want to hear any opposing views or actually engage in meaningful negotiation,” Moreno said following Schumer’s departure. “Would he continue zero-dollar premiums, which we know for a fact have enormous levels of fraud?”
Moreno added that, had Schumer stayed to respond, he planned to ask one final question: “Does he want these monies to go directly to insurance companies?”
The heated moment underscored growing frustration among Senate Republicans. They say Schumer’s caucus has refused to negotiate a clean continuing resolution without unrelated policy riders. The Democratic proposal reportedly includes an extension of the Affordable Care Act’s pandemic-era subsidy expansions. These are measures Republicans argue primarily benefit insurers and wealthy households.
The incident was first reported by The Daily Wire, with video shared by Amber Jo Cooper on X. It shows Schumer exiting the chamber mid-question.
Context
Moreno’s criticism mirrors broader GOP opposition to continuing what they call “COVID welfare” policies. They believe these distort the insurance market and fuel waste. The subsidies, initially passed under the American Rescue Plan, have been repeatedly extended at the insistence of Democratic leadership. This is despite federal watchdog reports citing oversight failures and fraudulent enrollment practices.

Editorial Closure
Moments like this define why transparency matters in Washington. Walking away from questions doesn’t solve a shutdown it deepens the distrust. Americans deserve leaders willing to debate openly, not retreat when challenged. Accountability isn’t optional; it’s the job.
