Netanyahu’s cabinet stands firm as Egypt and U.S. push for safe passage amid fragile cease-fire

TEL AVIV, Israel — Israel has rejected pressure from Egypt and the United States to grant safe passage to roughly 200 Hamas militants trapped in tunnels behind Israeli lines in southern Gaza, according to multiple reports.
Where They Are Hiding
The terrorists, believed to be hiding beneath Rafah and Khan Younis, are surrounded by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) units after months of ground operations. Israeli officials say the terrorists have ignored repeated calls to surrender.
“We will not allow safe passage for terrorists,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier this week, according to the New York Post. “Those who came to kill us will not leave alive.”

The IDF has described the tunnels as part of Hamas’ last remaining strongholds after its military and command infrastructure were largely destroyed during the Gaza campaign. Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir told the security cabinet that commanders know the militants’ location and that they must either surrender or face elimination.
“If they surrender, we’ll take them in their underwear to Sde Teiman for interrogation,” Zamir said, adding that the IDF is prepared to act “at a time and manner of our choosing,” according to Ynet News.
The U.S. Stance
Haaretz and other outlets report that U.S. officials have urged Israel to consider allowing the militants to leave under certain conditions as part of ongoing cease-fire negotiations. Washington reportedly hopes the move could prevent renewed fighting and preserve the truce.
Cease-fire holds, but tensions remain
Despite serious challenges to humanitarian efforts, the late-October cease-fire remains intact. Gaza lies in ruins, and according to Straight Arrow News, more than a million displaced civilians are without stable shelter or reliable access to food and medical supplies.
Israeli officials and others maintain that Hamas is using the cease-fire to regroup and rearm underground. Military spokesmen say the trapped terrorists are members of remaining operational units that refused to surrender when the truce began.

Netanyahu initially expressed willingness to allow them limited safe passage but faced immediate opposition from his cabinet. His current stance enjoys broad support among ministers and much of the Israeli public. Israeli officials view any deal that frees terrorists as contradictory to Israel’s wartime objectives and dismiss the idea as “beyond comprehension.”
Whats Next?
What comes next
Although no agreement has been reached, both Israeli and U.S. officials acknowledge the terrorists’ presence as a potential obstacle to maintaining the cease-fire. Israel’s security cabinet has ruled out any further negotiations that would allow terrorists to relocate to areas still under Hamas control.
“The government’s position is firm,” Zamir told reporters. “Israel will not negotiate with terrorists hiding underground.”
The standoff has become a test of Israel’s resolve and a reminder that even in cease-fire, the conflict’s most dangerous remnants remain just below the surface.
