Deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) shot and killed a 27-year-old man who was armed with a knife and holding a 7-year-old child during a tense standoff in Brandon on Sunday afternoon. This Hillsborough deputy shooting in Brandon is a complex case. Authorities say the deputy fired to save the child’s life after repeated warnings were ignored.
According to investigators, deputies were called to a home near Lakewood Drive and Brandon Boulevard around 2 p.m. after a report of a domestic disturbance involving a man choking a child. The suspect, identified as Mario Camacho, had allegedly grabbed his younger brother. He was threatening him with a knife. The Hillsborough deputy shooting Brandon event unfolded rapidly.
When deputies arrived, they spoke with family members who said Camacho had locked himself and the boy inside a back bedroom. Deputies could hear the child screaming and struggling. They tried to get Camacho to open the door. But when he refused, they forced their way inside.
Inside the room, deputies say Camacho was wearing a motorcycle helmet and two tactical vests with ballistic plates. He was holding a knife and keeping the child within arm’s reach. Authorities say Deputy Antonio Gonzalez, 25, gave several commands for Camacho to drop the weapon. He also ordered him to release the boy. When Camacho refused, Gonzalez fired his service weapon. Deputies immediately pulled the child to safety and began first aid on Camacho. He was taken to HCA Florida Brandon Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at 2:47 p.m. The boy did not appear to have physical injuries and was reunited with his family at the scene.
Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a briefing that the deputy acted to prevent the child’s death. The Hillsborough deputy shooting Brandon incident will be carefully examined.
“Our deputies were faced with a man actively threatening the life of a seven-year-old,” Chronister said. “They gave every warning possible, but when a life is in immediate danger, our duty is to protect the innocent. I have no doubt they saved that boy’s life.”
Authorities confirmed that Camacho had a history of domestic-violence arrests in nearby Polk County and was known to have mental-health issues. The sheriff’s office said it was unclear what triggered Sunday’s incident. However, family members told investigators that Camacho had been acting paranoid and agitated earlier in the day.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will conduct an independent review of the shooting. This is standard in any deputy-involved use of deadly force. Deputy Gonzalez has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
HCSO said body-camera video from the scene will be reviewed as part of that investigation. Officials have not yet released footage, but they indicated it confirms deputies’ accounts of what happened inside the room.

Neighbors told reporters they heard shouting. Then they heard several loud bangs before a wave of patrol cars and ambulances flooded the street. One nearby resident described seeing deputies rush a child outside. They quickly lifted him over a fence into waiting arms.
“It was terrifying,” the resident said. “You could hear the kid crying, and then suddenly it was all sirens. They were moving fast.”
Sheriff Chronister added that the situation unfolded within minutes. He noted that his deputies faced a decision that left no margin for delay.
“They knew a child’s life was in danger,” he said. “They did what they are trained to do in that moment — protect the innocent.”
Camacho’s family has been notified of his death. Investigators say they are cooperating with the sheriff’s office and have asked for privacy.
The sheriff’s office confirmed that this is at least the third deputy-involved shooting in Hillsborough County this year. Each case is reviewed separately by the FDLE and the State Attorney’s Office.
Authorities said the rescued child is now safe with relatives and receiving support services. Chronister noted that the department’s victim-assistance program will continue to work with the family through the aftermath of the incident.
“This is not the outcome anyone wanted,” Chronister said. “But a seven-year-old boy is alive today because our deputies acted. We will always stand behind our commitment to protect life, even in the most dangerous situations.”
No other injuries were reported during the incident. The sheriff’s office has not released the number of shots fired or the exact sequence of events inside the room.
The case remains under investigation by both the FDLE and HCSO’s internal-review division. Results will be made public once the inquiries are complete.
