Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is closing the gap on communist candidate Zohran Mamdani in the race for New York City mayor, according to new polling released this week.

A New York Post/Emerson College poll shows Mamdani leading with 40.6% of the vote, followed by Cuomo at 34% and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa at 24%. The margin of error is 3 percentage points. Therefore, the race is within striking distance for Cuomo just days before voters head to the polls.

“It’s no longer a runaway for the socialist from Queens. Cuomo is back in play.”

The latest numbers show a marked tightening from earlier in the year. At that time, Mamdani held a double-digit lead. Analysts say Cuomo’s surge comes from name recognition, moderate Democrats rejecting Mamdani’s socialist platform, and crossover appeal among Republicans and independents discontented with the city’s radical tilt.

Fox News reported similar findings, showing Mamdani at 41%, Cuomo at 36%, and Sliwa near 20%. Both polls highlight a last-minute surge for the former governor. He has framed his campaign as a return to sober governance after what he calls “the chaos of ideology.”

Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist often branded by critics as a communist, leans on youth and immigrant voters while defending his progressive record as a State Assemblyman. His campaign insists the lead remains solid. “New Yorkers want change that puts people before power,” a spokesperson said, downplaying the polls.

Meanwhile, Sliwa’s campaign argues both Democrats are out of touch with working-class voters, especially on public safety and immigration. “They’ve both had their shot, and look where we are,” Sliwa told supporters at a Brooklyn rally on Friday.

The three-way race remains volatile as early voting continues through the weekend. Pollsters say turnout among independents and moderate Democrats could determine the final outcome. It could decide whether Mamdani maintains his lead or Cuomo completes his late-season comeback.
