Gavin Newsom DOJ Poll Monitoring and Election Integrity

California governor did not publicly comment when the Justice Department announced monitoring of 86 jurisdictions in 27 states in 2024. In 2025, he denounced similar monitoring in his state.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced on November 1, 2024 that it would monitor polling stations in 86 jurisdictions across 27 states ahead of the November 5 general election. Among those jurisdictions was San Joaquin County, California. Governor Gavin Newsom made no public statement supporting or criticizing the move.

In October 2025, the department announced that it would again send monitors — this time to five California counties and one in New Jersey. Within hours, Newsom sharply condemned the decision, calling it an act of intimidation and “an attempt to rig the election.”

“Donald Trump’s puppet DOJ has no business screwing around with next month’s election. Sending the feds into California polling places is a deliberate attempt to scare off voters and undermine a fair election,” Newsom said in a statement and video posted to X.

A review of press archives, state press releases, and Newsom’s own posts found no record of him addressing earlier DOJ election-monitoring efforts under the Biden administration, including the 2024 announcement.

Federal poll monitoring is not new. The DOJ has deployed observers under both Republican and Democratic administrations for decades to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act and other civil-rights laws.
