In a joint statement by the Israeli Defense Force and Shin Bet, it was confirmed that Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar, and architect of the Oct. 7th attack in Israel, was killed by Israeli Troops during a routine operation. The death was said to be confirmed through DNA testing. Reports and photos of a body buried in rubble began circulating early this morning, with many speculating it was Sinwar, ahead of the Joint Statement being released.
Sinwar, born in 1962 in a refugee camp in the Gaza town of Khan Younis, was an early member of Hamas, which formed in 1987. He eventually led the group’s security arm, working to eliminate suspected informants for Israel. Arrested by Israel in the late 1980s, Sinwar admitted to killing 12 alleged collaborators, earning him the chilling moniker “The Butcher of Khan Younis.” He was later sentenced to four life terms for offenses including the killing of two Israeli soldiers.

In 2011, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released Sinwar from prison as part of a prisoner exchange deal that also freed around 1,000 other inmates. The exchange was negotiated to secure the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who had been captured by Hamas during a 2006 cross-border raid.
