SANDRINGHAM, UK — Thames Valley Police arrested Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, on Thursday morning. Authorities took him into custody on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The arrest occurred at the Sandringham Estate on his 66th birthday and represents a major shift in the investigation into his ties with Jeffrey Epstein.

Police confirmed they detained a man in his 60s for questioning. Officers also searched his residence at Wood Farm and his former home, Royal Lodge in Windsor. After 11 hours of interrogation at the Aylsham police station, investigators released Mountbatten-Windsor under investigation.

The Allegations

Newly released “Epstein files” from the US Department of Justice suggest that Mountbatten-Windsor shared confidential government reports with Epstein. Investigators believe he forwarded sensitive commercial briefs regarding trade missions to Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Singapore to the financier in 2010. One email appears to show Mountbatten-Windsor sending Epstein a confidential brief on investment opportunities in Afghanistan just minutes after receiving it.

A Historic Arrest

Mountbatten-Windsor is the first senior member of the British royal family to face arrest in nearly 400 years. King Charles III, who stripped his brother of his royal titles in 2025, responded with a formal statement.

“The law must take its course,” the King said. He added that the investigation would follow a “full, fair and proper process” with the “wholehearted support” of the monarchy. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed this sentiment, stating that “nobody is above the law.”

Future Legal Steps

Misconduct in public office is a serious charge in the UK. It carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Legal experts note that the investigation remains in the early stages, and the Crown Prosecution Service has not yet filed formal charges.
