The signs are flashing red and a major escalation involving Iran appears to be days or even hours away. As we look ahead to a very tense weekend several nations are sounding the alarm. Poland just issued an urgent evacuation order for its citizens today joining countries like Germany, Italy, Canada and India that have already told their people to get out. The window for a safe exit is rapidly closing. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk explicitly warned that evacuation may no longer be possible in a matter of hours. The Historical Context

To understand what is coming we have to look at how we got here. Ever since the Islamic regime took over in 1979 Iran has positioned itself as a primary state sponsor of terror in the region. The ruling clerics have routinely funded rogue proxy groups and repeatedly threatened to wipe the United States and our allies off the map. Decades of this extreme foreign policy have left the Iranian economy in absolute ruins. Citizens are dealing with hyperinflation, severe poverty and an infrastructure so mismanaged that the country is literally running out of water.

The Internal Unrest

The people of Iran have had enough. Massive protests erupted in late December and have raged on for weeks. The regime has responded with predictable brutality. We have seen numerous failed uprisings over the years but the current crackdown is resulting in catastrophic civilian casualties. While the Iranian government tries to downplay the numbers independent human rights groups report over 7000 fatalities. Furthermore United Nations sources suggest the true death toll could reach as high as 20000.

The Diplomatic Status

While the streets burn diplomatic efforts are hanging by a thread. United States and Iranian officials met for indirect talks in Geneva this week and US officials are already calling the meetings a complete failure. We know the US is firmly demanding an absolute halt to uranium enrichment and a complete cessation of proxy funding. However rampant speculation suggests the underlying demands go much deeper. Many analysts believe the only acceptable outcome for Western powers at this point involves the total dismantling of the nuclear program. There is even open speculation from US leadership that the removal of the regime itself would be the best possible outcome.

The State of Iranian Air Defenses

The military posture indicates that diplomacy has likely failed. Following the joint US and Israeli bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities late last year Iran is operating with severely depleted air defenses. Their Russian and Chinese radar networks are compromised and the US has already proven it can easily dismantle these exact systems as seen recently in Venezuela.

The US Strike Package

The United States has amassed an unprecedented strike package to exploit these weaknesses. Carrier Strike Groups led by the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS Gerald R Ford are in position. They bring specialized EA18 Growlers and E2 Hawkeyes to control the airspace and blind enemy radar. Furthermore the region is flooded with stealth air power. Over 50 advanced fighter jets including F35s, F22s, F15Es and F16s have deployed to allied nations in the last 48 hours. Supported by E3 Sentry command aircraft and a massive logistical pipeline of cargo planes these stealth fighters are primed to open a safe corridor for heavy bombers.
