Morgan McSweeney resigns as UK prime minister Keir Starmer faces mounting backlash over Peter Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador and renewed scrutiny of Epstein links.

The political crisis engulfing Britain’s Labour government deepened Sunday after the chief of staff to Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigned. This came over the controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States.
Morgan McSweeney, Starmer’s most senior political adviser, announced his resignation following mounting fallout tied to Mandelson’s documented association with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
A Resignation Framed as Accountability
In a blunt statement to reporters, McSweeney said the decision to appoint Mandelson “was wrong.” He acknowledged the damage it had done not only to the Labour Party, but to public trust itself.
“The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was wrong. He has damaged our party, our country and trust in politics itself,” McSweeney said.
As Downing Street’s chief of staff, McSweeney held the highest unelected position in the prime minister’s inner circle. He accepted responsibility for advising Starmer to proceed with the appointment last year, calling his resignation “the only honourable course.”
While noting he did not personally oversee the vetting process, McSweeney stressed that the system itself had failed. He said it must be overhauled in a meaningful way rather than treated as a symbolic exercise.
Epstein Files Trigger Police Action
The scandal intensified after the U.S. Justice Department released a new tranche of Epstein-related documents. Those files prompted a police investigation into Mandelson. He has been accused of passing market-sensitive government information that allegedly benefited Epstein in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis.
British authorities reportedly raided two Mandelson properties on Friday as part of a misconduct in public office investigation.
Mandelson resigned from the Labour Party last Sunday and stepped down from the House of Lords earlier this week. He has not responded to media inquiries, and CNN reported it has been unable to reach him.
Starmer Defends Record, Not the Decision
Starmer issued a statement thanking McSweeney for his service. He credited him with playing a key role in Labour’s landslide election victory.
“It is largely thanks to his dedication, loyalty and leadership that we won a landslide majority and have the chance to change the country,” Starmer said.
Notably absent from the prime minister’s remarks was any direct defense of the Mandelson appointment itself. This silence has only fueled criticism of Starmer’s judgment.
A Government Under Pressure
Mandelson’s long-standing friendship with Epstein was widely known well before his ambassadorial appointment. That relationship reportedly continued even after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution from an underage girl. As a result, it raises serious questions about why such ties were dismissed during the vetting process.
The controversy has now placed Starmer’s leadership under intense scrutiny. Critics argue the scandal reflects not just a personnel failure but a deeper cultural problem within elite political circles.
