X outage reports spiked sharply on Downdetector on Jan 16, 2026
X suffered a widespread service disruption on Friday, January 16, 2026, leaving many users unable to load timelines, post, or access the platform reliably on web and mobile.
Outage tracker Downdetector showed a sharp surge in complaints as the disruption unfolded. Reuters reported that by about 10:35 a.m. Eastern, more than 41,000 users in the United States had reported issues. Reports also climbed in other regions, including roughly 8,000 in the United Kingdom and more than 2,400 in India during the same reporting window. Reuters noted that Downdetector totals are based on user submitted reports and can differ from the actual number of affected users.
Symptoms described across reports were consistent with a broad service failure. Users reported blank screens, timelines failing to load, and repeated refresh failures. Some users also reported Cloudflare branded error pages while attempting to access X through a browser, which typically appear when a connection to the site’s servers fails. Separate reports also described problems accessing Grok during the disruption.
As of Reuters reporting on January 16, X had not issued a public explanation for the outage and did not respond to a request for comment.
The January 16 disruption followed another major outage earlier in the week. Reuters reported that on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, an outage peaked at more than 28,300 logged issues in the United States before easing, with a similar spike reported in the United Kingdom.
