Providence Police Chief faces criticism after declining to answer questions about what the Brown University shooter shouted before opening fire.

Providence, Rhode Island. Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez Jr. has sparked outrage after a press conference about the Brown University mass shooting, where he declined to tell the public whether the gunman shouted words before opening fire on students.
On December 13, 2025, an unidentified man walked onto Brown University’s campus during a review session and opened fire on students, killing two and injuring nine more.

During a follow up press conference, reporters repeatedly asked Chief Perez whether the suspect had shouted anything before the attack. Perez refused to confirm the phrase some witnesses claim they heard.
According to eyewitnesses and social media posts, the shooter shouted “Allahu Akbar” before unleashing gunfire on the students, a detail that police did not confirm at the briefing.
Perez’s response has ignited criticism from residents, campus groups, and commentators. They argue that withholding such information frustrates public trust. It also slows understanding of the suspect’s motive.
At the time of the press conference, no suspect had been publicly identified or arrested. Law enforcement initially detained a person of interest but later released them without charges. The shooting left the Brown community in shock and grieving, with increased manhunt activity continuing as authorities seek leads.
Critics say that transparency from law enforcement is essential during active investigations, especially after tragedies that devastate students and families. Supporters of the chief counter that police must be cautious about releasing unverified information that could jeopardize the ongoing manhunt.
