Stolen identity representing the case of an illegal immigrant using an American citizen’s personal information for years.

The New York Times published a sympathetic piece about an illegal immigrant. This individual lived for years under the stolen identity of Minnesota resident Dan Kluver. The Times downplayed the crime by referring to the stolen identity as “borrowed.” This description attempts to transform a serious offense into something harmless.
Kluver only discovered the theft after police pulled him over. They informed him his license was suspended in Missouri. It was a state he barely visited. Tax records, employment files, and debt notices began appearing under his name in states he never lived in. A Guatemalan national caused the damage. He illegally entered the United States. He used a fraudulent Social Security card tied to Kluver’s information.
The consequences for Kluver were real. He faced IRS problems and back taxes. He endured years of confusion. His government and financial records were corrupted by someone who never should have been in the country. Authorities eventually arrested the impostor and charged him with aggravated identity theft and false representation of a Social Security number. But the burden of repairing the mess fell entirely on Kluver.
Despite all of this, the New York Times focused more on the illegal immigrant’s hardships. They paid less attention to the American citizen who paid the price. The article failed to explain the most important part of the story. How does an innocent American actually restore their identity after it has been stolen and used across multiple states for years
No guidance. No solutions. No accountability.
Identity theft involving illegal immigrants is not a fringe issue. It affects real Americans who spend years trying to undo the damage left behind. Major outlets should not minimize these crimes or leave victims without answers. Journalism requires clarity, not selective sympathy.
