Hakeem Jeffries discusses the future of Obamacare during an interview on CNBC’s Squawk Box.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries clashed with a CNBC Squawk Box host this morning after being directly questioned about Obamacare and whether Democrats are intentionally avoiding a bipartisan fix.
During the segment, the host challenged Jeffries by saying, “I don’t think you want to get a deal done. This is something where you would like to see the rates go higher and allow the Republicans to hang themselves with that.”
Jeffries immediately fired back, calling the claim “a ridiculous assertion” and adding, “Shame on you for saying that. It’s not a partisan issue for us. In fact, the states that are the most impacted as it relates to an Affordable Care Act tax credit expiration are all Republican states.”
After a brief exchange, the host pushed again, saying, “That is why the Republicans would sign on if you actually came up with something that looks like a bipartisan deal.” Jeffries appeared irritated throughout the segment.
This is not the first time Democrats have been pressed on accusations that they are using health care costs as a political weapon. The recent government shutdown fight put the issue front and center, and today’s exchange highlights a growing trend, even in mainstream media. acknowledging that the Affordable Care Act is failing and requires significant rewriting.
Whether anyone in Washington has the political will to do that remains to be seen.
