The Charges
Federal prosecutors unsealed an indictment accusing her of stealing five million dollars in FEMA disaster relief funds and laundering the money through a network of accounts tied to her family, her associates and even her own 2021 congressional campaign. The charges came from a grand jury in Miami and they include theft of federal funds, conspiracy, wire fraud, money laundering and illegal campaign contributions. If she is convicted she could face more than fifty years in federal prison.
Her Background
Cherfilus McCormick is a Democrat from Florida’s 20th District. She first entered Congress in early 2022 after winning the special election to replace the late Rep Alcee Hastings. She then won a full term later that same year. Her district includes parts of Broward and Palm Beach County and is one of the most heavily Democratic in the state.

The indictment
The DOJ says this entire scheme started in 2021. Her family health care company took part in a FEMA funded COVID vaccination staffing contract. Prosecutors say a five million dollar overpayment was received, concealed, and then laundered through multiple accounts. They say parts of that money ended up as contributions to her own congressional campaign.
The indictment also names several co defendants. Her brother Edwin Cherfilus, Nadege Leblanc and her former tax preparer David Spencer. Each of them faces charges tied to the alleged laundering, the straw donor campaign activity, or the false tax filings. They all face serious prison time if convicted and the IRS along with the FBI are leading the investigation.
