WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump hosted Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at the White House for a working lunch on Friday, discussing energy security, economic cooperation, and regional stability.

According to officials from both governments, the conversation centered on Hungary’s continued dependence on Russian oil and gas, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the potential for new U.S. investment in Central Europe. The leaders also discussed ways to strengthen trade ties and deepen defense cooperation within NATO.

Renewed Cooperation

The meeting marked Orbán’s first visit to Washington since Trump returned to office and was viewed by analysts as a diplomatic signal of closer alignment between the two nations.

White House aides said the leaders also touched on post-war reconstruction in Eastern Europe and the role private investment could play in rebuilding infrastructure and restoring economic growth.

The meeting drew attention from European observers who view Hungary as one of the few EU nations maintaining open dialogue with both Washington and Moscow. Political analysts said the engagement underscored Trump’s preference for direct, bilateral diplomacy over larger multilateral forums.

Orbán’s government, which has often clashed with the European Union over migration and national sovereignty, continues to position itself as a conservative partner to the United States. The two leaders have frequently praised each other’s populist approaches to governance and emphasis on national identity.

While no formal agreements were signed, both sides described the meeting as productive and said follow-up discussions would continue at the ministerial level.
