An explosion early Saturday morning at the Goldenson Building on Harvard University’s Longwood Medical Area campus in Boston is now under investigation as a possible deliberate act.

What We Know

• A fire alarm triggered at about 2:48 a.m. local time on Nov 1st in led to an immediate emergency response at the Goldenson Building.
• The blast occurred on the fourth floor, according to campus officials.
• Responding officers say they observed two individuals fleeing the scene shortly after the explosion.
• The Boston Fire Department’s Arson Unit concluded the explosion “appeared to be intentional.”
• The FBI is assisting the investigation alongside Harvard University Police, the Boston Fire Department, and local law enforcement.
• No injuries have been reported and no additional explosive devices were found during a safety sweep of the building.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have released surveillance images of two individuals seen leaving the building immediately following the blast. Officials urge anyone with information to contact investigators.

The fourth floor of the Goldenson Building remains closed, while the rest of the facility has reopened under heightened security. The floor is primarily used by the Department of Neurobiology for laboratory research and teaching spaces. Harvard officials have not yet confirmed whether any specific research areas or lab equipment were affected by the explosion.

No motive or suspect identities have been released at this time.
