FBI Director Kash Patel told CBS News that a “potential terrorist attack” allegedly targeting Halloween weekend in Michigan was thwarted Friday morning.

In his statement, Patel said:

“Through swift action and close coordination with our local partners, a potential act of terror was stopped before it could unfold. The vigilance of this FBI prevented what could have been a tragic attack — and thanks to their dedication, Michigan will have a safe and happy Halloween.”

According to a spokesperson for the FBI Detroit Field Office, agents were active in Dearborn and Inkster, conducting “law enforcement activities.” The spokesperson emphasized that there is no current threat to public safety.

A law-enforcement source told CBS News that two teenagers were arrested and that others are being questioned. The source added that a member of the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force discovered two individuals engaged in an online ISIS-affiliated chat room, leading to the arrests. Investigators reportedly found no active plot but acted pre-emptively after identifying the online communications.

Members of the FBI task force were photographed outside a Dearborn residence on Friday morning. City officials confirmed that the FBI gave local authorities only limited advance notice of the operation.

The Dearborn Police Department released a statement saying it was aware of the federal operation and assured residents:

“There is no threat to the community at this time.”

Dearborn sits roughly seven miles west of downtown Detroit, and Inkster lies about twelve miles farther west. Both cities saw heightened law-enforcement presence as part of the morning raids.
