For years, Americans have been told that identification laws are about security. After 9/11, the federal government created the REAL ID Act in 2005, forcing U.S. citizens to provide layers of documentation just to renew a driver’s license or board a plane. The message was clear: identity standards had to be tightened, not loosened, to protect national security.
But now, states like California under Governor Gavin Newsom and New York under Governor Kathy Hochul have turned that logic on its head. Instead of protecting the integrity of our identification system, they’re eroding it. Not only are they giving out Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) and standard IDs to illegal immigrants, they’re doing so with shockingly lax standards. In some cases, the licenses even list “No Given Name” as the holder’s name.
That’s not security it’s chaos. And the cherry on top? These licenses qualify as REAL IDs, the same IDs American citizens have to jump through hoops to get.
REAL ID for Citizens vs. Illegals: A Two-Tier System
For an American citizen to obtain a REAL ID driver’s license, the requirements are extensive. You need:
- A certified birth certificate or passport
- Proof of Social Security number
- Two documents proving residency (utility bills, mortgage, lease, etc.)
- Often, secondary documentation like marriage or name-change certificates
It’s a process designed to verify identity beyond doubt. Every American knows the frustration of gathering paperwork, making DMV appointments, and sometimes being turned away over minor details.
Meanwhile, illegal immigrants in California and New York are walking away with licenses after providing far less. In some cases, officials literally input “No Given Name” into the system. That means the state is knowingly issuing IDs to people without verifiable identities.
What does that mean in practice? It means the REAL ID program designed as a safeguard has been undermined by the very states entrusted to enforce it.

Why CDL Licenses Matter
Handing out a standard driver’s license to illegal immigrants is bad enough. But when states issue Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs), the stakes get even higher. CDLs are not just for casual driving. They allow the operation of:
- Tractor trailers and 18-wheelers
- Hazardous material (HAZMAT) transport vehicles
- Buses carrying dozens of passengers
These are high-responsibility, high-risk vehicles. Drivers are trusted with goods, materials, and lives. Requiring background checks, verifiable training, and proper vetting is non-negotiable. Yet states are treating CDLs like participation trophies handing them to individuals who may not even have a verifiable name.
It’s not only reckless it’s a national security concern.
The “No Given Name” Outrage
Imagine being pulled over and handing a police officer an ID that says:
Name: No Given Name
That isn’t a parody it’s reality in states where illegal immigrants receive licenses without providing a proper name. What happens when law enforcement, federal agencies, or even employers attempt to run a background check on someone listed as “No Given Name”?
The result is a gaping hole in accountability. It creates:
- A loophole for criminals and cartels to exploit
- A nightmare for law enforcement trying to identify individuals
- A pathway for fraudulent use of identification systems
The very idea of issuing a government-backed ID to someone whose name isn’t verified should be unthinkable. Yet, here we are.

National Security at Risk
The REAL ID Act was born out of the 9/11 Commission’s findings. Terrorists had exploited weak ID standards to move around the country unnoticed. The solution was supposed to be tighter vetting and stronger safeguards.
Fast-forward to 2025, and the safeguards are being dismantled not by foreign enemies, but by domestic political leaders prioritizing ideological agendas over national security.
When an illegal immigrant with a “No Given Name” REAL ID can board a domestic flight, apply for jobs, or potentially access restricted areas, the entire security structure collapses. The rules become meaningless when they’re not applied evenly.
Why Democrats Push This Policy
Critics rightly ask: Why would governors like Newsom and Hochul support such reckless policies?
The answer is simple: politics. By issuing licenses and IDs to illegal immigrants, Democrats create a pipeline toward legitimizing individuals who entered the country illegally. Licenses lead to voter registration databases. IDs lead to easier integration into welfare programs.
It’s not about compassion it’s about power. The more individuals who become dependent on the state and loyal to the party that handed them legitimacy, the more political capital Democrats gain.
Meanwhile, the risks to law-abiding citizens—from security breaches to road safety are ignored.
The Cost to Taxpayers
This isn’t just a security issue; it’s a financial one. Taxpayers foot the bill for:
- Expanded DMV infrastructure to process illegal immigrants’ licenses
- Administrative overhead for “special” documentation categories
- Increased law enforcement burdens when fraudulent or unverifiable IDs surface
Add to this the billions already spent on sanctuary policies, welfare programs, and healthcare for illegal immigrants, and the picture becomes clear: American citizens are paying for their own security to be undermined.
The Double Standard
Perhaps the most infuriating part is the double standard. Citizens are held to rigid, unforgiving standards, while illegal immigrants are granted shortcuts.
- A citizen’s paperwork error can delay or deny a license renewal.
- An illegal immigrant can walk out with a REAL ID license listing “No Given Name.”
- Citizens are told voter ID is “too strict,” while illegals face no comparable scrutiny.
This is not equality—it’s a deliberate devaluation of citizenship itself.
Where Does It End?
If states are willing to hand out REAL IDs without verified names today, what comes tomorrow? The erosion of ID standards is a slippery slope. If “No Given Name” passes for identification, then the very concept of identity becomes meaningless.
Security doesn’t collapse all at once it crumbles through policies like these, where leaders put ideology above duty.
Conclusion: A Nation at Risk
The Schumer Shutdown may dominate headlines, but beneath the noise lies a deeper threat: the steady dismantling of America’s security standards. States like California and New York aren’t just experimenting with bad policy they’re jeopardizing national safety.
The REAL ID system was built to protect Americans. But when governors hand out REAL IDs to illegal immigrants, sometimes without even requiring a name, they betray the very citizens they swore to serve.
Americans deserve better. We deserve leaders who value citizenship, uphold the rule of law, and put security above politics. Until then, every “No Given Name” license handed out is one more crack in the foundation of our nation’s security.
