A community town hall in north Minneapolis turned chaotic Tuesday evening when Anthony James Kazmierczak, 55, was arrested for spraying Rep. Ilhan Omar with a syringe. While the liquid caused immediate concern among attendees and security, hazmat teams and forensic investigators have since confirmed the substance was apple cider vinegar.
The Incident
The confrontation occurred as Omar was delivering a speech regarding federal immigration operations and calling for the resignation or impeachment of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. Witnesses noted a specific moment in the video where the camera focus shifted to the suspect just prior to the incident. As Omar looked in his direction and made her comments about Noem, the suspect lunged forward to deploy the spray.
The vinegar hit Omar along with Minneapolis City Council Member LaTrisha Vetaw and State Senator Bobby Joe Champion. Despite the disruption, Omar insisted on continuing the event, telling her security team and the crowd that she would not let “bullies” have the show.
The Suspect
Kazmierczak is a local Minneapolis resident with a history of minor legal issues. Court records reveal multiple prior traffic convictions spanning several decades, including two DUI convictions in 2009 and 2010. Beyond his driving record, he has no major history of violent offenses. Neighbors have described him as having physical health struggles, including Parkinson’s, following a car crash years ago that affected his spine.
Legal Status and Federal Jurisdiction
While Kazmierczak was initially booked into the Hennepin County Jail on a state charge of third degree assault, the investigation has shifted. The FBI has now taken the lead in the criminal probe. Because the victim is a sitting member of the United States Congress, this incident falls under federal jurisdiction.
