A shooting involving U.S. Border Patrol agents left one person in critical condition Tuesday near the U.S.-Mexico border in southern Arizona, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred in Arivaca, Arizona, a small community located roughly 10 miles north of the border. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed it is coordinating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Customs and Border Protection as part of the response.
Officials have released few details about what led to the shooting. According to the Santa Rita Fire District, emergency crews responded to the scene and treated one individual who had been shot. The injured person was placed into custody before being airlifted by medical helicopter to a regional trauma center.
“Patient care was transferred to a local medical helicopter for rapid transport to a regional trauma center,” the fire district said in a statement.

“Patient care was transferred to a local medical helicopter for rapid transport to a regional trauma center,” the fire district stated.

Meanwhile, Customs and Border Protection and the FBI declined to provide additional information despite multiple media inquiries. As of publication, officials had not confirmed whether Border Patrol agents discharged their weapons. They also did not confirm whether the individual posed a threat or whether other parties were involved.
Furthermore, authorities have not released the identity of the injured individual. They have also not indicated whether any Border Patrol agents or civilians suffered injuries during the encounter.

At this stage, investigators continue to review the incident. Until federal authorities release official findings, many key facts remain unresolved. Nevertheless, the involvement of multiple agencies underscores the seriousness with which officials are treating the shooting.
