Former Wisconsin judge Hannah Dugan resigned after being accused of interfering with federal ICE agents attempting to arrest an illegal immigrant facing violent assault allegations.

A Wisconsin judge who became a national symbol of judicial activism colliding with immigration enforcement has officially stepped down.
Hannah Dugan has resigned from her position. This followed revelations that she attempted to interfere with federal immigration authorities. She helped an illegal immigrant accused of a violent assault evade arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
According to reporting from Western Journal, the individual Dugan allegedly attempted to shield from ICE was accused of punching another man approximately 30 times during a violent encounter. I cannot independently verify the exact number of blows, but the report characterizes the incident as a serious and sustained assault.
What is not in dispute is the judge’s conduct inside her own courtroom.
Federal authorities stated that Dugan actively worked to obstruct ICE agents who were there to take the accused into custody. She allegedly redirected the agents. She facilitated an opportunity for the suspect to exit through a restricted area of the courthouse.
That action triggered a federal investigation and ultimately ended her judicial career.
Dugan’s resignation comes after mounting scrutiny. There are questions about whether members of the judiciary are permitted to substitute personal ideology for the rule of law. Judges are not legislators. They are not activists. And they are not empowered to nullify federal authority from the bench.
Dugan intervened in an immigration arrest. The arrest involved a defendant accused of violent conduct. By doing so, Dugan crossed a line. Even sympathetic observers struggled to defend this action.
This case underscores a broader and increasingly visible problem. When officials are entrusted with enforcing the law, they should not obstruct it. If they do, the justice system stops functioning as a neutral institution. It becomes a political weapon instead.
Public confidence in the courts depends on the belief that judges apply the law equally, not selectively. When that trust is broken, resignation is not persecution. It is accountability.
Dugan is now out of office. The damage, yet, extends beyond a single courtroom. The precedent set by this case serves as a warning. Other officials who believe their position places them above federal law should take heed.
It does not.
