The FBI released this wanted poster seeking information on the suspect who placed pipe bombs near the DNC and RNC headquarters in Washington on January 5 2021. Authorities announced an arrest in the case in December 2025.
Federal authorities have arrested a suspect in the long running investigation into the pipe bombs placed outside the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee headquarters in Washington on the night of January 5 2021.
The arrest marks the first major breakthrough in a case that remained unsolved for nearly five years and drew national attention due to its timing just hours before the January 6 Capitol riot.
Suspect Taken into Custody
According to public reporting, the suspect is a man from Woodbridge Virginia identified as Brian Cole. He was taken into custody Thursday morning and is expected to make his initial court appearance in federal court in Washington.
At this time, formal charges have not yet been publicly released. Authorities have not disclosed whether additional suspects are being sought.
Bombs Were Live and Defused
The pipe bombs were discovered outside both party headquarters on the morning of January 6 before they could detonate. Law enforcement officials previously confirmed the devices were viable explosives and capable of causing serious injury or death.
No injuries were reported as a result of the devices being placed.
Surveillance footage previously released by the FBI showed a masked individual wearing a hooded sweatshirt and backpack placing the devices the night before the Capitol breach.
Investigation Details Still Limited
The FBI has not yet released details on a possible motive. It is also not yet clear if the alleged bombing was directly coordinated with the Capitol riot or carried out independently.
For years, the agency offered a large financial reward for information leading to an arrest. The case generated extensive public interest and speculation during the ongoing investigations related to January 6.
Further details are expected following the suspect’s initial court appearance.
This is a developing story.
